Microsol Resources' BIM Perspectives seminars are events held annually in New York, Boston, and Philadelphia. They are tailored to study the usage of building information modeling (BIM) by multi-disciplinary project teams and to showcase best practices for using BIM as a basis for a collaborative design and construction process. We will hear about the challenges and benefits of the BIM technology from the perspective of leading local and national AEC practitioners.
This year's theme is Collaboration between the multi-disciplinary project team. We will hear about the impact of BIM, and investigate new ways to accelerate innovation. We will explore collaboration for resilient infrastructure and collaboration for building project workflows.
When Dodge Data & Analytics (formerly McGraw-Hill Construction) first began to track BIM adoption in 2007, only 28% of companies were BIM users. By 2009, that figure had grown to 49%, and in 2012, 71% of the firms surveyed report using BIM. Today, BIM has emerging standards and best practices and an increasingly skilled user base incorporating its functionality into daily workflows. BIM also drives innovation by expanding its uses into new tasks and integrating its data into many other vital technology tools. The industry has now completed enough major projects with BIM that it’s time to start quantifying its impact on outcomes and using those performance metrics to help everyone understand how to derive the greatest benefit from BIM on their projects. We will hear more from Steve Jones who directs Dodge Data and Analytics’ initiatives in BIM, and has also co-authored Dodge Data & Analytic's SmartMarket Reports on interoperability and BIM.

Promised results for BIM tools are not being more readily achieved because so-called higher uses of BIM – analyses including scheduling, cost estimating, energy, sustainability, facilities management and operations – require not only collaboration on integrated teams, but also the collection and strategic application of building data. We will hear from Randy Deutsch who will share insights on how design and construction practitioners and their project teams can make better use of BIM.
