Stephen Jones | Dodge Data & Analytics
Steve Jones focuses on how emerging technologies are transforming the construction industry. In addition to over 100 speaking engagements globally and numerous articles in industry publications, he authors Dodge Data & Analytics' (formerly McGraw-Hill) SmartMarket Reports on technology, distributed to millions of readers worldwide and frequently cited as authoritative references. Steve also hosts the ENR FutureTech events that address how advanced technologies are shaping the future of our industry. Steve is an active leader in many industry initiatives including the BuildingSMART Alliance, the BIMForum, Construction Users Roundtable, Alliance for Construction Excellence and the TC Chan Center for Building Simulation and Energy Studies, and has been a judge for the AIA BIM Awards. Prior to McGraw-Hill, Jones spent 19 years in creative and management roles with top design firms, most recently as a principal and board of directors member with Burt Hill, one of the largest A/E firms in the US (now merged with Stantec). He holds an MBA from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, and a BA from The Johns Hopkins University.

Brian Kapan is a registered architect with 22 years of professional experience concentrated on the technical execution of architecture and interiors. Leading the technical practice of SOM's interior design studios, he is responsible for the firm's dedication to quality in design, documentation, process and performance. As an advocate of sustainability across and beyond the design community, Brian has directed architectural firms’ development of sustainable practices for projects and operations, integrating high performance into every project at every phase and encouraging innovative planning to his clients, consultants and staff. As a leader of SOM’s interior design practice, he reinforces the role designers play in improving the health and wellbeing of the occupants of the buildings and spaces they create for their clients, focusing resources to educate the firm in making decisions that include occupants in addition to traditional performance criteria. As an adjunct professor at FIT, Brian educates young designers in the basics and trends of building technologies and systems and their impacts locally on design features and globally on energy and resource consumption. He was recently recognized with the 2017 service award from Urban Green, the USGBC’s New York Chapter.
Brian is presenting about “Advocating for the Future of Building Technology”. This presentation singles out the advancement of one building system by highlighting a variety of obstacles to reducing potable water use and identifying new resource streams through collection and treatment. Brian will also discuss SOM’s 2030 Commitment and New York City’s Energy and Water use Report benchmarking data with building auditing data to explore the energy use—creating a more accurate picture of how New York’s large buildings contribute to overall city carbon emissions.
As the Sustainable Design Specialist at HOK Architects, Apoorv leads the architecture teams to integrate sustainability concepts in the early on in the design process. His expertise in performance analytic studies such as thermal analysis, daylight analysis, life cycle studies help inform core building and engineering decisions. Along with ensuring high performance standards in the proposed designs he works to reduce energy consumption, enhanced daylight and comfort, and reduced embodied energy in the overall lifecycle of the construction process. He also helps in facilitation and documentation for LEED for various projects at HOK. As a passionate adopter of new technology, he takes active part in computational research projects both within the firm and outside refine to improve the workflow of sustainable design in the construction industry. Apoorv is an active member of IBPSA - NY, AIA-COTE (NY) and Urban Green Council and presented at various conferences such as Greenbuild, DIVA Day, SimAUD and SBSE. Apoorv holds a Bachelor of Architecture degree from School of Planning and Architecture, Delhi, India and a Master in Design Studies (Energy and Environment) degree from Harvard Graduate School of Design.
Apoorv is presenting about “Modeling Practices for High Performance Buildings” specially integrated high performance design process from requirements and components, conventional, and current practice and processes. He will share HOK’s Sustainability process, workflows, tools and collaborations and share their high performance façade design. He will also discuss future needs in climate change, resiliency, health and well-being.
Simon Whelan | FenestraPro
Simon is a Founder and Chief Operating Officer of FenestraPro, based in Dublin, Ireland. FenestraPro is a software provider developing energy efficiency applications for AEC design professionals on Autodesk platforms such as Revit, Forge and Quantum. As one of the founders, Simon has evolved FenestraPro from concept, through start-up phase, and is now in scaling, with FenestraPro Premium and FenestraPro Linc being used by some of the largest architectural practices in the world. Simon holds a Masters in Architecture (Advanced Environmental and Energy Systems), is a certified LEED Green Associate, and is an expert in Building Performance Analysis, particularly through Autodesk applications such as Revit and Green Building Studio.
